Farewell Song

My heart was hard
Antarctic ice.
Shrink-wrapped layers,
Chunks cold-blue
Chilling my bones
And compassion.

Inert, frozen,
Confounded and numb;
Unable to feel
My veins, my pulse, or
The joys of just being
With you.

Then…

Your breath a summer;
Seasoned warmth
Melted self-sufficiency,
And inwardness
– A farewell song
To winter’s frost.

The snow fell deep this year,
Yet the children
Were covered
Until the Spring;
Blanketed by
Grace, undeserved.

If this land within
Is cold and white,
Then mistakes are undone,
Swaddled and tucked
By your robe
Of eternal light.
